What does it mean to be a Progressive in 2016?  What did it mean to be a progressive 100 years ago?  Are you a progressive, if so...why and what are you 'progressive' about, if not...why not?

I believe that being progressive in the 1900s was pushing for a society that is better than it was yesterday. Progressive today is getting things done and making progress on goals. I think I am progressive about some things. I am progressive about getting better at soccer. I can also not be progressive though. I sometimes forget to do my homework or forget to study for a test.

I agree with Andrew in the aspect that in the 20th century, progressivism was making society better. I would also like to add that in the 1900's, progressivism was mainly focused in societal improvements such as civil rights movements. In addition, health care improvements, and better living conditions through technological improvements such as electricity were considered progressivism at that time. In 2016, however, progressivism is to innovate and make life easier through technological advancements. I believe that we have reached Albert Einstein's fear that technology would take over social interactions and there would be a "generation of idiots". I consider myself a progressive because I am passionate about getting things done and improving from my mistakes.

I agree, being progressive is very important in a Nation. Being progressive allows the country to improve in many aspects such as economic and technological. In the early 1900s, being progressive often correlated with civil rights while in 2016 it is mostly about making life more comfortable through advancements in technology. I believe that I can progressive at times but sometimes I am not.

To be progressive in 2016 you have to innovative. A person should want to create new things. I'm progressive due to the fact that I use new ways to do my work every day. In the 1900s you were progressive if you wanted to change things. Living conditions, factories, war and more were all progressive ideas. Like Andrew said progressive people in the 1900s pushed for society to be better than before

I believe that I'm a progressive because I like to get things, such as homework, finished fast. In the 1900's progressivism was more fixated on societal progress such as women's rights to vote and food safety regulations. However, today it is different. Today progressivism focuses on less societal and more of an overall increase on the accumulation of certain goals rather than a generally better society. This is seen in today's Planned Parenthood and Black Lives Matter.

Being a Progressive in the 1900's meant wanting to get things done and believing that the government can do good things. A variety of people called themselves Progressives back then, even if they had different ideas over issues like interracial marriage and immigration policies. Today, people who call themselves Progressives most often identify with a certain set of social and political beliefs like the Black Lives Matter movement, abortion rights, and anti-Iraq war. This is because we don't often see Republicans or centralized Democrats label themselves as Progressives since they have different ideas over these issues. I think I am a progressive in some ways because I believe the government can have a positive impact and that we should be getting things done in order to better our country.

Progressivism is a movement towards more rights for everyone. In the 1900s, Progressivism referred to a very broad topic of societal reformation. This era is characterized by things like women's suffrage and the sudden concern that the rich had for the poor. In the 2000s, not much has changed about the core beliefs of the movement. It is still very broad and difficult to find a steady definition as the connotations surrounding the movement are always changing. I am progressive because I believe in a lot of personal rights/equality movements.

I agree with Olivia's overall definiton of progressivism. Back then, reform was focused on broader topic and on making a better nation for everyone. I would say that in 2016, progressivism focuses on individual issues in movements such as Black Lives Matter and arguments over this game such as abortion or even the legalization of Marijuana. Both then and now, the term progressive can be used to mean many different things but overall work towards better lives for people. There are some things that I am progressive about such as equal rights in all things, but on topics such as abortion I remain very conservative.

Being a progressive in 2016 means making sure everyone gets a fair shot, does a fair share of work, and plays by the same rules. Above all, it's the movement toward rights for everyone. 100 years ago, progressivism came into widespread use when democracy was failing. It was meant to rebalance the distribution of power through government and citizenry. I am a progressive because I believe in increasing rights for all.

In 2016, Progressive is another term for left wing/liberal. This term was started in the early 1900s by a population of citizens that wanted more from their government. Progressivism is mostly government reform of new or trendy ideas. I really don't like the new progressive, everyone wins society which is why I am not for Hillary, but for Trump 2016!

One hundred years ago, being "progressive" meant that citizens belived that their nation could do better than it was currently was. They wished to reform their country and government to fix problems that they belived were occuring, however, many people would use this word for different causes they wished to fight for which would in turn create many opposing 'groups' of progessives. In that time period, it was generally used by people who wanted to better society to fit their needs. People who called themselves "progessive" would allow women to vote but also create the Jim Crow laws. The 2016 definition of "progressive" also means to better the country and government to provide for society and its needs. The term isn't used as readily as it was one hundred years ago but there are some opposing views within the group still. Some people that use the term "progessive" are trying to gain political power while others truly match the defintion, persay, of "progressive." I feel that I am "progressive" since I stand for organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Black Lives Matter and etc. which were included on the "Progressive Honor Roll" in 2015. I want the world to be a truly equal place for any human being that lives in it which I believe is the defintion of "progressive".

The Progressive movement has seen many shifts through its time in history, but I think that there really hasn't been much of a change to it throughout the time periods. As a whole, the Progressive idea means wanting to better your country and it's society. Although our beliefs now differ from those in the 1900s, I think this universal idea still stands in our society. In the 1900s, Progressives wanted change for the poor as well as reforms for their government, such as supporting more women's rights and individual freedom. Nowadays, the same ideas still stand, but have taken on a different character due to being in a different society. Examples of this today are the support of the Black Lives Matter movement and the prevalence of Feminist ideas in today's society. The reforms today aren't as intense as they were in the 1900s, but they still possess the same hunger and desire for a change, therefore following the Progressive Movement. I myself would identify as a Progressive because I want many of the reforms desired in today's society, like movements for feminism and equal rights for all.

In the 1900s a movement started many Americans believed democracy was failing. They believed democracy was failing because few had so much money while other people lived in tents on the street. Progressive movements had many strange turns during the 1900s they got women a right to vote while also having the Jim Crow laws in place. Today being progressive is similar to being a socialist. I do not consider myself to be a progressive person because I believe that our nation has put in place a system where people who are willing to work hard enough can achieve and make good money. I do not agree with the socialistic idea of trying to create economic equality. I compare the amount of money people make to grades in school and a teacher would never take 5% of a kid's grade who had a 96% in the class and give it to a different student with a lower grade. A teacher would never do that no matter how under privileged that lower grade student is.

I agree with you in some respects, but economic equality is more complicated than under privileged people and highly privileged individuals simply being unequal. For example a poor person could desperately need the money due to medical issues, or something like the Flint crisis. Although Flint is a poor community with high crime rates, it doesn't mean that they do not need aid for money for water, and filters for showers. In addition, places like this have poor education and end up not being able to effectively educate people, especially now that they have lead poisoning. People have great difficulty getting out of poverty although they may be just as able to be in the same position as they privileged person if given the circumstances. Just because they are under privileged does not mean they deserve to be under privileged.

I think that progressivism has grown since 100 years ago. Today there are many different ideas of reform from Black Lives matter to LGBT rights, animal rights, Planned Parenthood and more. Today, to be progressive is to be active in reforms and support consistant views on concepts and ideas. 100 years ago, it was fighting for more simple rights and ideas and establishing progressivism as fighting to reform our society and government. As a general idea, I don't think progressivism has changed much, but in the way of the specific reforms that are being made its changed a lot. I believe I am a progressivist because I actively believe in equal rights and many other reforms that I believe are important to make this world a better place.

In 2016 being progressive is being used by many different groups with varying opinions, ranging from anti vaccination, to social equality groups. In my opinion, groups striving for social, political and economic equality are the true progressives as they are pushing for a change in society for the benefit of certain groups of people. Since the use of the word "progressive" was first used majorly to describe opinions on government and society, the connotation of the term has been unclear and gone through many shifts. However, the intentions of the groups using this term to describe themselves have consistently been centered around the ammending of society or government to what they beleive to be for the better of the country. It should be noted that some of those who considered themselves progressive were not actually offering ways to improve the state of society as a whole this is represented best by advocates of Jim Crow laws that described themselves as progressive. I would consider myself progressive by the definition I accept since I support social and political equality as well as equal economic opportunities.

I think progressivism in 1900s is both similar and different from what it is now. It is different because the economy of the two time periods are completely different and it is not as well defined now as it was a century ago. It is similar in the aspect that progressives in both time periods believed a large government was needed to help the middle class grow away from the upper class. I do not consider myself a progressive because I do not follow the political views such as planned parenthood and I agree more with the views of Glen Beck and small government supporters. I agree with Colin in his definition of how progressive is the government trying to take charge of social aspects.

Bernie Sanders current campaign is evidence that progressivism is still alive and well today. I would consider myself a progressive as I feel that the current social movements need action. Progressivism in the 1900s and today is viewed differently. A century ago, the society relied on the government to make changes in various social aspects of their everyday lives. Today, many individuals strive to change aspects of their lives by themselves. Also, now the government makes changes more easily then when compared to a century ago. Progressivism is also different today due to the fact that there are such technological advancements.

I believe that being progressive today is working to a set of predesignated goals or certain things that progressivists want to change such as “Gun Control”. Progressivists in the 1900’s wanted to push society into a stronger state of being. These early Progressivists did not have a list of predesignated goals to work on in these times the people came up with this “list” of sorts. I would consider myself a progressivist, because there are some things in society that I wish to change. At the same time in school I work to achieve a set of goals like achieving a good GPA, getting accepted to colleges, and getting better at sports. In this sense I believe that I am a progressivist because I want things to change, and I work toward a set of predesignated goals.

The term "progressive" has undergone many definitive changes from 1900 to 2016. In 1900, progressives worked for large scale societal and political reforms. These reformations could be detrimental to society, as shown by the Jim Crow Laws. In 2016, being a progressive is commonly associated with socialism. This holds true as the current democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders refer to themselves as progressives and advocate for socialistic policies. Personally, I do not see myself as a progressive in the 2016 political sense of the word due to my disagreement with socialist policies. I believe my political interests most closely resonate with the likes of Chris Christie or the financial flat tax brought to light by Bloomberg.

Over a century ago, being a progressive meant a wide variety of things. You could be against alcohol, for an expansion of voting rights, or you could support segregation. It was a widespread idea of changing something, with each side believing their cause was for the greater good. Major progressivists back then such as Theodore Roosevelt were against the extremely wealthy aristocrats, and believed in helping the poor and unfortunate by distributing wealth. In today's society, progressivism also means changing the country for the "greater good", even though there's always two sides for every movement. I would not consider myself a progressive because I am not old enough to vote and do not care enough to research political stuff. I also think that today's movements are overly exaggerated and thus rendered useless and ineffective. For example, the feminism movement is good, but many individuals have made it terrible, into what is now known as "feminazism." Besides, there are way too many things wrong with this world and homework is one of them.

To be a Progressive today in 2016 has a different meaning than it did about one hundred years ago. Although similarities still exist, in earlier times, a progressive wanted to reform the current issues of the government or society and believed in improving upon their ways by trying to take action of some kind. Now in 2016, being progressive usually refers to wanting to make a change for the better and striving to achieve your goals. In modern day, when the word "progressive" is used, it often refers to "leftishness" in politics as well. Democrats often associate themselves with being progressive and often tie the word "progressive" with wanting to take stands for creating economic and social equality, reproductive freedom, and civil rights. In many aspects I would also consider myself progressive considering that I strive to achieve my goals and believe in making changes for the better to improve our society today.

Progressivism through history has changed slightly, but the overall main idea has the stayed the same. That idea is acknowledging a problem and finding a way to fix it through reform. In the 1900’s progressivism was seen through social reform for minority groups, women’s suffrage, and the rich helping the poor. Woman called for the reform due to their lack of rights and their inability to vote. The rich white Americans started to become more involved in helping the poor. These ideas of social reform are still evident in today’s society. The continuing prevalent view of femenism has made its way from the 1900’s all the way to 2016. Since this time period, we’ve come so far; in the very early 1900’s women could not even vote, and now in 2016, it is very possible that a woman could be the next president of the United States of America. The idea of the rich helping the poor is also very evident today because of charities and organizations that are essentially the people who ae better-off helping the less fortunate. Although many ideas of progressivism have stayed the same through these past 100 years, some parts of the progressive way of life has changed. In the 1900’s the reform ideas that were encompassed in progressivism were for larger and broader groups of people, such as all women, and mainly the government was involved in helping the goals of the reform become reached and accomplished. However, now in 2016, people set personal goals that are relatively small all the time, I even did 5 in my new classes this semester, just today, and the government doesn’t directly help with the achievability of these goals. Even though the ideas of progressivism have changed due to changing and expanding history, the main idea is the same. Overall, I do consider myself a progressive because I believe in many social reforms going on right now in todays society, the main one being equal rights for women and feminism, as well as equal rights and treatment for all.

I think progressivism refers to a variety of responses to the economic and social problems rapid industrialization introduced to America. The early progressives rejected Social Darwinism. In other words, they were people who believed that the problems society faced (poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare) could best be addressed by providing good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. The Progressives believed that in order to address modern problems, America needed to abandon the old ideas of the Founding in favor of a new expansive conception of the role of government. Progressives paved the way for modern liberalism and politics, and their core ideas are still the mainstay of today’s liberalism. In the 21st century, progressives continue to embrace concepts such as environmentalism and social justice. I think I am progressive considering the fact that I support social and political equality.

In the 1900's, a Progressive was a person who pushed for social and political change such as women's rights or a redistribution of wealth amongst the economic classes of America. The main idea of being a Progressive has relatively remain unchanged. This includes supporting social and political movements, such as LGBT movements, the push for gay marriage, gun control activism, Black Lives Matter, and more. We still see women's rights movements that are reminiscent of back in the 1900's. I am a Progressive, because these ideas can help better society. I want to better my life by maintaining a high GPA and doing extracurricular, and also help others by volunteering.

I think to be a progressive in 2016 means turning a social problem into a movement that can bring more rights. But in the 1900s, progressive became a movement when democracy was failing to gain new politics to enable a rebalancing distribution of power. I would say I am a progressive with so many things going on in society today, there are some things I agree with. I agree with Hailey how she believes rights should be for everyone equally.

The progressive movement was started because of the belief that democracy was failing and a widespread social activism for political reform. Some major themes of the progressive movement was Women's right to vote, and modernization or making "old ways" more efficient. Today progressivism is based on reform and, still, modernization, and social justice. There are many movements against the authoritative figures in the United States based of social progressivism. I believe that I do support the progressivism ideals, because I believe that government corruption should be eliminated and support most of the social justice movements.

I agree with Anabela. Progressivism is the same concept that has evolved. In the 1900s, progressivism was a term used to coin disapproval of the democracy that the government had instilled, supporting reform to innovate a country in all aspects. In the 1900s, there was a stronger emphasis on economic equality, while today that same issues remain along with more supported social change, evident with the widespread LGBT rights movement. It was once a term used by Democrats and Republicans alike, but is now a reference to "liberals" or "leftists." Instead of envisioning a traditional America, they push for reform with a "new day" to fit in contemporary society. I believe I am a progressive with political views, and I'm sure many can agree that todays society has become more liberal in attitides towards equality for all genders and races.

There is a difference to be a Progressive in 2016 and a 100 years ago, but still based around the same idea. Now, it is more toward self improvement, but in the 1900s, the government had a huge part in helping the country reform in many ways such as politically, economically, and socially. I would consider myself progressive since I set goals to improve myself.

As society became more modernized the progressive movement grew and developed as well. Progressivism continued as new innovations and rights were created because people were able to set larger goals. I think that progressivism has developed from the 19th century because people in 2016 are changing and setting goals for the world as a whole instead of just for that specific time in society. In 2016 people work more to improve things that can have better results for the future and not just for the present time. I see myself as being progressive because I support equal rights for everyone as well as set goals for myself.
